Steve Carell’s best film performance to date can be found in the fitfully engaging Dan In Real Life, where his long-suffering persona suits a character who lets his long-dormant hopes rise for a moment, only to be shot down again. Carell plays Dan Burns, a newspaper columnist who writes about family issues and relationships. As a widower with three growing girls to raise, however, the difference between Dan’s printed wisdom and his struggles with fatherhood and loneliness is often vast. He’s put to a severe test when he packs up the kids for a cabin holiday with his parents and siblings, then falls for the exotic, if elusive, Marie (Juliette Binoche) during a solo excursion to a bookstore. Stirred by a woman for the first time since his late wife, Dan is shocked to find that Marie is actually dating his brother Mitch (Dane Cook), and that she’ll be spending the vacation with him in the midst of his family. From that point, the script, co-written by director Peter Hedges (Pieces of April), pretty much becomes a parade of difficult circumstances under which both Dan and Marie have to keep their attraction to one another secret. Certain scenes work better than others, but there is an overall monotony to the movie that isn’t helped by a lack of onscreen chemistry between Binoche and Carell. Both actors are fine on their own terms, but whatever is supposed to be clicking between Marie and Dan isn’t compelling enough to make one truly care that they get together somehow. Still, this is a film with plenty of moments to like, especially when Carell gets to broaden his previous range of emotions in a movie. –Tom Keogh

pure, unadulterated cinematic garbarge. granted, to make such a bold statement requires valid reasoning…which i have. the following is a brief assessment of the movie:

the characters are a bunch of yuppie scum who spend time on family talent shows, battle of the sexes crossword style, and lawn aerobics. the daughters (with the exception of the youngest) are snotty brats. the older one is a smart-mouthed know-it-all with a brain the size of a peanut. the other is a trashy little tramp with a promising future in the escort service industry. the brother is played by america’s favorite joke-thief, dane cook, who once again fails miserably while simultaneously adding to his fanbase of pimply preteens and pathetic college student dorks. the love interest is beautiful, mensa-status smart, funny, perfect and completely unconvincing (and unwatchable). the rest of the cast can be summed up as nauseating jerks.

i sat through the movie waiting for something interesting to happen and, tragically, it never did. it was the most overrated and uninventive vomit-inducer i’ve seen in a while. do yourself a favor and watch something else, anything else.

Customer Review: An excellent solution, much better than gas powered
I have owned this mower for three years. It cuts great. Electric is a great alternative to gas powered, if it’s practical. You can mow any time of the day without worrying about noise, you never have to worry about oil changes, running out of gas, or storing gas for that matter. Also, clean up is easier because one can flip this item over (in the grass, when it’s not plugged in) to clean it out and not worry about flooding any engine or spilling gas. Of course, the pain is the cord but if you have a small lawn, it’s not a big deal. This mower works great.

Those who say this isn’t the “real” doll house are missing the point entirely! The Williamsburg house was specially made because “Thaddeus Crane” and “Emma Birdwhistle” never had their own proper dollhouse, but lived on shelves. The book explains this quite clearly. The one-quarter life size scale is fascinating in itself. Anyone who is a fan of handmade dolls, doll houses, or Tasha Tudor should delight in this amazing book. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

This isn’t Tasha’s dollhouse, like I thought it was. I got suckered in like many. Still, it is a well presented book with delightful pictures. And the furnishings are Tasha Tudor’s. The ideas and elements of the design are well within the reach of the serious dollhouse collector and for that, the product of emulation, it is invaluable and inspiring. But like Coleen Moore’s dollhouse, and Queen Mary’s, there is a lot about it that are not within the reach of the average person. One has to realize this was not an authentic doll house, but a item made for display for people to marvel at. And marvel we do. The plans shown in there are adaptable. But I would much rather have seen Tasha’s dollhouse…the real thing.

As a collector of all things Nancy Drew, I love these books. They are graphic novels featuring the titan-haired detective and the other familiar characters from the Nancy Drew novels. The stories are new and modern, with a anime twist to them. There’s a bit more supernatural flavor to these. I am not generally a fan of graphic novels, so I can’t comment on their quality from that perspective, but I think they are an entertaining and unusual format of story for lovers of Nancy Drew.

Director Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice) gives Ian McEwan’s bestselling novel a sumptuous treatment for the screen that should come to be regarded as one of the defining films of the epic romantic drama. Indeed, everything about this film stems from those three words: there is little here that is not epic, romantic, and dramatic, and Atonement is a film that masterfully expresses the overarching sense of adventure and emotion that such stories are meant to convey. In this instance, the story centers around the love story of highborn Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and housekeeper’s son Robbie Turner (James McAvoy, in a star-making turn), in England shortly before World War II. Despite their class differences, they are powerfully attracted to each other, and just as their relationship begins Robbie is tragically forced away due to false accusations from Cecilia’s younger sister Briony (Saoirse Ronan). She has a crush on Robbie, too, and after reading a private letter he sent to Cecilia, and then witnessing the first expression of their mutual love but mistaking it for mistreatment, her resentment grows until it leads to her telling the lie that will send Robbie away. Soon World War II breaks out; Robbie enlists and is posted to France, Cecilia is a nurse in London, and Briony, now age 18 and aware of what she has done, tries to atone for her actions–but none of them will be able to get back what they have lost. Knightley and McAvoy are perfectly cast as the young star crossed lovers, and the young Ronan is particularly impressive, but it’s clear that the real star of this film is the director. Wright allows Atonement to revel in every moment of its story and each scene is compelling in its own way, but that now famous extended shot with Robbie on the beach at Dunkirk–filmed in one take and sure to be considered one of the great long tracking shots in film history–is the most memorable moment in this remarkable film. Customer Review: Better watch it on big screen
The Atonement is about a precocious young girl who loves to write and one day sees a couple from her bedroom and interprets something entirely different from the real situation. Her misinterpretation causes great suffering to that couple and in the end we realized that she changed the ending to make it happy so as to atone for her mistake. Atonement is very well shot and I am sure it will be nice to watch it on big screen.

Customer Review: I’d give it about a 3.5 if I could
I guess I have to agree with other reviews I’ve read in print and online - this movie was good for the first hour, and then the ending was kind of a deflation of the mood that was set in the start. The nature of the zombie/vampires was not well explored, particularly the clear demonstration of their vestigial intelligence and apparent social organization. The film just kind of gallumphs to a close. I would also have to agree with criticisms of the sometimes-chunky CGI; thi sis the first film I’ve ever saw that I actually thought, gee, it wouldn’t be so bad if at some future date they went back and retouched some of the computer graphics. Much of it was surprisingly cheesy. Will Smith does a good job in his role — loved the dog, as well. (Joe Sixpack, Slipcue)

Customer Review: Smith made the unreal, real.
The story and the script were amazing. But like all movies acting can make it or kill it in the end. That being said, something happened to Will Smith between I Robot and The Pursuit of Happyness where he went from being a snotty so so actor to becoming a flippin amazing actor. I have no idea what it was. Maybe it was having a child. I have no idea but this is the second film he has been in where he blew me away. Like I robot he was working within a fictional future world which is why I am comparing the films. I think the challenge of all actors is to make the unreal, real. This is really really really hard in a film like this one that is so far from reality yet Will did it and I think it is a crowning achievement for him as an actor. It was nothing short of brilliance.

I’m using this filter in my wall hung shop vac.Because this vac is used to collect sawdust from my small band saw and belt sander, it clogs fairly quickly, but the system works well and is very compact. Over the past eight years or so that the vac has been used this way, I found that by using a piece of 1/4-20 allthread, a few nuts and washers I could fit two filters together into my shop vacuum. This provided a 100% increase in filtering and lets me extend the time between service cleaning the vacuum tank and filters. I order the filter four at a time which gets me free shipping from Amazon, so this works out to be a pretty good deal. Four filters will last me three years or more depending on use.

Nice idea, but this isn’t the product if you fly. What’s billed as a micro mover fold-away cart works okay when it is attached to a bag, but there is no efficient way to use it at the airport in a TSA security line. It takes a couple minutes to unhook it from the bag and fold it up, including the straps. Then, you’d need to put it back together to roll to your gate. Finally, there is no easy way to drag it down the aisle in the plane, take the bag off it, and fold it up to stow it without irritating people behind you who want to get to their seat. Worthless for actual travelers.

Customer Review: Sound great, cheap build quality - read on.
These sound great but I question the build quality which feels very cheap. The satellite speakers are very light and are made out of plastic.

You might say, “But these are THX certified”. Well, THX only measures sound quality and not build quality.

That said, these do sound great and the subwoofer is just the right size yet still totally cranks out the bass, whereas the comparable Logitech model has a subwoofer that is way too huge.

I wonder how long my Klipsch ProMedias will last, I have high hopes (and low expectations) but for the fairly cheap price, I was willing to take the risk.

These speakers are solid and sound great. The sound is balanced and rich. Klipsch is always great quality and these are no exception. In fact, you couldn’t do better for the money. I work in radio and as an advertising music producer and demand great quality in audio. These speakers are big, balanced, rich and powerful. The ONLY issue I have with them is that the power switch is down in the back of the subwoofer which makes it kind of a pain to shut on and off. But don’t let that stop you.
