Do children need vitamin supplements?
Vitamins are necessary for the normal functioning of the body. However, taking vitamin supplements on a regular basis is not necessary. Breast milk contains adequate amounts of all vitamins except vitamin D, which may need to be supplemented.
This is especially important in the winter months when children are not out in the sunlight as much. Sunlight helps the body produce or use vitamin D. Commercial infant formulas contain vitamin supplements.
If babies over nine months of age are receiving whole cow\'s milk instead of formula, they\'ll need a daily vitamin C supplement until their diet provides other sources of vitamin C (such as fruits).
Vitamin D is added to all commercial liquid milks so babies drinking these fluids don\'t need extra vitamin D.
After one year of age, children should be eating a diet containing foods from each of the four food groups listed in Canada\'s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. As a result, added vitamins and supplements will not generally be necessary.
It is more important for children to get their vitamins from eating a variety of good foods rather than taking extra vitamins \"just to be sure.\" Vitamin-popping encourages sloppy food habits and may give children the idea that they have to take a pill every day just to stay well. It is also expensive. Taking too many vitamin supplements can cause disease.
